Why choose a retractable louvre roof for your outdoor area?

Why choose a retractable louvre roof for your outdoor area?

Outdoor living areas are most enjoyable when they can adapt to the weather rather than being limited by it. While a fixed roof can provide dependable shelter, it also permanently covers the space. For some homes, this can reduce sunlight, restrict airflow and make a deck, patio or courtyard feel more enclosed than intended. A retractable louvre roof offers a more flexible approach. Instead of choosing between a fully covered area and an open outdoor space, you can adjust the roof to suit the conditions and the way you want to use the area. It gives you the option to enjoy more sunlight and open sky in fine weather, while still providing overhead shelter when conditions change. This flexibility can be especially valuable in Wellington, where sunshine, wind and rain can all arrive within a short period. Rather than abandoning the outdoor area when the weather shifts, you can adjust the roof to help keep the space comfortable and usable.

At Concept Outdoor Solutions, we offer SunFold® retractable louvre roofs that are custom-made to suit your home, layout and outdoor living plans. Available in freestanding, wall-mounted and integrated configurations, SunFold® gives you more control over how open, bright or sheltered your outdoor area feels throughout the year.

What is a retractable louvre roof?

A retractable louvre roof is an adjustable outdoor roofing system that can open further than a standard pivoting louvre roof. It is designed to give you control over sunlight, shade, airflow and overhead shelter without permanently covering the area.

With a SunPivot® system, the louvre blades tilt in place. Changing the blade angle allows you to control how much sunlight and ventilation enter the space while the roof structure remains in the same position. SunFold® includes this same tilting capability, but the blades can also retract and fold back. This allows the system to open up to 75% of the roof area, creating a much clearer view of the sky and a stronger open-air feeling.

The roof does not need to be fully open or closed. The blades can be tilted, partially retracted or folded back further depending on the amount of light, airflow or cover you want at the time.

SunFold® can also close completely when overhead protection is needed. Integrated guttering and hidden drainage help direct rainwater away while maintaining the clean, architectural finish of the system. Because every installation is different, SunFold® can be designed as a wall-mounted, freestanding or integrated roof. This means the system can be planned around the shape of the outdoor area, the existing home and the way the space will be used.

Enjoy more sunlight and open sky

One of the main reasons homeowners choose SunFold® is the ability to uncover much more of the outdoor area in fine weather. A standard pivoting louvre roof can let sunlight through by changing the angle of the blades. However, the blades and roof structure still remain overhead. With SunFold®, the blades can fold and retract towards one side, leaving most of the covered area open to the sky. This can create a noticeably different outdoor experience. A patio or deck can feel brighter, less enclosed and more connected to the surrounding garden. On calm, sunny days, the area can feel much closer to a completely uncovered outdoor space. The retracting system can also be useful when the louvre roof sits close to large windows, sliding doors or indoor living areas. Opening the roof allows more direct light to reach these areas, which can help reduce the permanent shade sometimes created by fixed outdoor structures. This does not mean the roof needs to be fully retracted every time the sun appears. You can open only part of the system when you want a balance of sunlight and shelter. This is particularly useful when one part of the area needs shade while another would benefit from more light. By adjusting how far the roof opens, you can change the atmosphere of the outdoor area without changing the structure itself.

Adjust the roof to suit the conditions

Wellington weather can change quickly, so an outdoor area needs to work across more than one set of conditions. SunFold® gives you several roof positions to choose from rather than limiting you to fully open or fully closed. When the weather is warm but the sun is strong, the blades can be tilted to create shade while still allowing air to circulate through the space. This helps reduce heat build-up without making the area feel closed in. If you want more sunlight, the roof can be partially retracted. This opens a larger section of the area while keeping some overhead cover in place. It can work well when the weather is settled but you still want shade over a dining table, seating area or outdoor kitchen. On clear days, the roof can fold back further to expose up to 75% of the covered area. This provides a much more open view of the sky and allows direct sunlight into the space. When rain arrives, the roof can close again to provide overhead protection. Optional rain sensors can also be added to respond automatically to changing conditions. Having several positions gives you more precise control over the space. Rather than deciding whether the outdoor area is usable based on the weather, you can adjust the roof to suit the moment.

Where can a retractable louvre roof make the biggest difference?

SunFold® can work across many types of outdoor areas, but there are some situations where its retracting capability may be particularly valuable.

The right system will still depend on the home, the position of the area and the level of openness you want. Our team can assess the space and help determine whether SunFold® or a pivoting louvre roof is the better fit.

Outdoor areas beside large windows

A fixed roof near large windows or sliding doors may reduce the amount of sunlight entering the home. Being able to retract the louvres can help maintain natural light around adjoining living rooms, kitchens and dining areas

North-facing or sunny outdoor spaces

Areas that receive strong sunlight may benefit from a roof that can provide shade during the hottest parts of the day, then retract when direct sun is more comfortable.

Smaller patios and courtyards

In a compact outdoor area, a permanently covered roof can sometimes make the space feel more enclosed. Retracting the blades can create a greater sense of height and openne

Outdoor dining and entertaining areas

SunFold® allows the atmosphere of the area to change depending on the occasion. The roof can open for a sunny lunch, provide partial shade during the afternoon or close when more shelter is needed.

Homes where an open-air feel is important

Some homeowners want weather protection but do not want their outdoor area to feel like a permanently roofed room. A retractable system provides both options within the same structure.

Create a more flexible outdoor living space

A retractable louvre roof can help one outdoor area support several different uses. Instead of designing a deck or patio around a single purpose, you can create a space that changes throughout the day. The roof may be opened during a quiet morning coffee, partially closed to provide shade over an afternoon meal or closed completely when the weather becomes less settled. This makes the area easier to use for relaxing, dining and entertaining without needing separate zones for every activity.

Optional additions can make the space even more adaptable:

  • Outdoor blinds

Outdoor blinds can provide extra protection from wind, glare and rain coming from the sides. They can also help create more privacy when the area is overlooked.

  • Glass sliding doors

Glass sliding doors can add another level of weather protection without blocking natural light or views. When open, they help the area feel connected to the outdoors. When closed, they create a more protected outdoor room.

  • Integrated LED lighting

Integrated LED lighting can make the area easier to use after dark, while heating strips can add warmth during cooler evenings.

  • Heating strips

Outdoor heating can make a big difference to how often your louvre roof area gets used, especially outside the warmer months. Heating strips help add warmth on cooler evenings, making the space more inviting for dining, relaxing or entertaining. We offer Heatstrip® options that can be integrated with your louvre roof, including Heatstrip® Classic, Heatstrip® with remote and Heatstrip® MAX DC. The right option will depend on the size of the area, how exposed it is and how you plan to use the space.

These features can be incorporated into the design of the louvre roof so the finished space feels considered and cohesive. Planning them during the initial design stage can also help create a cleaner installation. Together, the retracting roof and optional additions allow the space to move between bright and open, shaded and airy or more enclosed and sheltered.

Is a retractable louvre roof right for your home?

A retractable louvre roof may be the right choice if you want outdoor shelter without permanently covering the space. SunFold® is particularly well suited to homeowners who value direct sunlight, natural airflow and an open view of the sky. It can also be useful where maintaining light around nearby windows and indoor living areas is an important part of the design. The system gives you more control than a fixed roof and more openness than a standard pivoting louvre system. However, the best option will depend on your priorities. Some homeowners may prefer the simplicity of SunPivot®, while others may value the additional flexibility offered by a roof that can retract. At Concept Outdoor Solutions, we custom-design every louvre roof around the home, the available space and the way the outdoor area will be used. Whether you are considering a freestanding, wall-mounted or integrated SunFold® system, our team can help you create an outdoor space that feels open when you want sunlight and sheltered when the weather changes.
